Have you ever heard of tulpas? A lot of people have. A little history: although the word was coined by 20th century theosophists, its earliest references in concept reside in early Buddhist texts. The concept has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years. It’s found its way into pop culture. Some horror movies and whatnot in the 90s and the 2000s were made about the tulpa. And this pop cultural influence is what clearly helped inspire the rise of tulpamancy, which emerged into discourse in 2009. Tulpamancy is the term that has been assigned to the defining practice of an internet community that was formed on 4chan by users of the website who encouraged each other to make tulpas, which many users did, as the numbers of them compiled somewhat rapidly unto and beyond the point that now many people have found out about this. Tulpas––now everyone knows what they are. Except for maybe you. But there’s no shame in that. I’ll tell you what they are. Tulpas are thoughtforms, and thoughtforms are entities that are emanations of the self.
Essentially––tulpamancy is the intentional practice of creating thoughtform entities through psychic self-abandonment. The belief is that one can bud off portions of one’s psyche by reassigning those portions to an imaginary being; in time, with consistent efforts to reassign these parts of yourself to the imaginary being, the imaginary being will at some point assume a lifeforce of its own, despite that its energy will draw from the same brain that it shares with you. Upon this point what you will have for yourself is a bonafide tulpa. In this sense tulpamancy is a psychological complex wherein the psyche has come to recognize parts of itself as someone else. However tulpamancy is not a mental illness––it is all intentional, innocuous, and even adaptive, and even helpful to the soul. In short it is sage work. A well developed tulpa will be able to operate autonomously from the rest of the maker’s consciousness. It will have its own ideas, its own mannerisms, and its own personality. It will even have its own dreams and desires. The first rule of tulpamancy is that you look at the tulpa as if it were a real entity, or at least a semi-real entity that is distinct from yourself. Otherwise it will not work. The thing about tulpamancy, though, is that it is not considered magic––WHEN it is called tulpamancy. Indeed––the fair majority of tulpamancy practitioners consider the causality of tulpas to be neurological and psychological. So, where does magic come into tulpas? The thing is that magicians make tulpas all the time. But when magicians do this they don’t call it tulpamancy. They call it magic. Chaos magicians know a thorough methodology for doing so. I think only a few self-styled folks, and only just a few in the tulpamancy crowd, actually do it better than your average chaos magician. Today I’m gonna teach you how to make a tulpa in the chaos magic tradition.
In chaos magic, tulpas are called thoughtforms and there’s 4 types of them, or 4 stages of development that they can go through in something that is called the thoughtform continuum. In the thoughtform continuum, thoughtforms begin as sigils. Sigils are symbols that you must draw yourself. Your sigil will represent your desired outcome for your thoughtform. Your sigil will work best if it is a monogram. Now you have to empower the sigil, or implant the desire that you have attached to your sigil into your unconscious mind. This is called charging. You must charge the sigil. To do this you will have to enter a gnostic state, which is an altered state of consciousness that is self induced. To enter a gnostic state you must hyperfixate on one idea or one thought and break the threshold of discomfort that will challenge you to think about other things, which you mustn’t do. Just think about one thing. And nothing else, and if you sustain that, you will enter a gnostic state and your desire that you have attached to your sigil will bypass your conscious mind and implant inside your unconscious. You want the sigil to implant inside your unconscious, because according to Austin Osman Spare, the man whose ideas became the foundation of modern chaos magic, the unconscious of the magician is what communicates with kia, which is the collective consciousness of the universe in which every individual is an aspect. But you don’t even have to believe that to make this work. And that’s what’s great. Not everyone, for example, can enter a gnostic state. If you personally can’t do that then you can charge your sigil with other ways. For example, draw your sigil and beneath it write out its name. You should have a name by this point. After you draw the sigil and write the name out, then you must basically hyper focus on the sigil. Put yourself in a room by yourself, with no music, no people, no TV, and no open computer––no distractions. So, now you must study the sigil and try to bring it to life with your eyes. Imagine your sigil transform before your eyes as you make it metamorphosize from a sigil to a servitor. A servitor is the 2nd stage of development for thoughtforms in the thoughtform continuum. So, keep it up and imagine the essence of your future servitor’s presence. Keep this up and keep on doing it. It can be hard because you might not know what to think about, and this might frustrate you if it happens, but don’t give up. Unlike when you go into a gnostic state, one charge will not be enough if you try to charge your sigil with this alternative method. With this method, you might have to charge the sigil several times. But once your charging is complete you will know it because your sigil will have graduated to the next stage. It will have become a servitor and this will be manifest. Although your newly anointed servitor will have a most meek presence, its presence will be observable, which will charm you.
Now––now that it’s born you gotta do some casting. Start feeding the servitor with demands. What do you want your servitor to do for you? Do you wish for it to be your cosmic advocate? Because it can do this. Do you seek an aura that your servitor can provide you? Because it can do this, too. It can do many things, and that is why you have made it in the first place. So, start doing some casting. Feed it with demands, and be authoritative. Your servitor will respond to your commands, and this will make it grow up to become big and strong. You want to provide it with instructions and send it off on errands. Presume that your servitor is completing these tasks for you and act accordingly. But don’t thank your servitor for its labors. Just keep asking it for more and more. The more demands you make, and the more you believe that it’s doing these things for you, the stronger the servitor will become. In time it will hit maturity, and that is when it will take on autonomy.
If you share your servitor with others, and others believe in your servitor and enlist your servitor for their own duties, your servitor will escape your exclusive aspect and become an egregore. An egregore is the third form of thoughtform in the thoughtform continuum. To make an egregore is a bittersweet achievement. For as soon as your servitore is mature, already your thoughtform begins dreaming of breaking free from you. Once it is an egregore, you will have allowed this to happen. Examples of egregores include slenderman, and other boogie men. But they can also become purely positive creatures. It all depends on what they wish to become and perhaps also how they were reared before becoming egregores. After egregore there is one final stage. This is the Godform. A Godform is any egregore who has transcended a group to become the shared thoughtform of some entire cultures or societies. Examples of Godforms include the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy, and the thoughtform at least of Santa Claus. And that, good people, is how you make a tulpa.
